Product Description:

What Montelukast is:

• Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks a group of substances called leukotrienes.

How Montelukast works:

• The leukotrienes cause narrowing and swelling of the airways in the lungs.
• By blocking the leukotrienes, Montelukast improves asthma symptoms and helps control the asthma.

When Montelukast should be used:

• The doctor has prescribed Montelukast to treat your child's asthma and prevent asthma symptoms during the day and night.
• Montelukast granules are used to treat asthma in patients aged 6 months to 5 years who are not adequately controlled by their medication and need additional treatment.
• Montelukast granules can also be a treatment alternative to inhaled steroids for patients aged 2 to 5 years who have not recently taken corticosteroid tablets for their asthma and who cannot use inhaled steroids.
• Montelukast granules also prevent exercise-induced narrowing of the airways in patients aged 2 years and older.
• Your doctor will decide how Montelukast granules should be used depending on the symptoms and the severity of your child's asthma.

How To Use:

• Make sure your child always uses this medicine exactly as the doctor or pharmacist has told you. 
• Talk to your child's doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
• This medicine should be given to children under adult supervision. 
• Your child should take Montelukast granules every evening.
• It should be taken even if your child has no symptoms or if she/he has an acute asthma attack.

For children from 6 months to 5 years:

• The recommended dose is one sachet of Montelukast 4 mg granules taken by mouth every evening.
• If your child is taking Montelukast granules, you must be sure that your child is not taking other medicines that contain the same active ingredient (montelukast).

For children from 6 months to 2 years, Montelukast:

Montelukast  4 mg granules are available:

• Montelukast 4 mg granules are available for children aged 2 to 5 years.
• Montelukast 4 mg granules are not recommended for children under 6 months.

How should I give Montelukast 4 mg granules to my child:

• This medicine should be taken by mouth.
• The sachet is opened immediately before use.

Montelukast granules can be given either:

• Directly in the mouth.
• Or mixed with a tablespoon of cold or room temperature soft food (eg applesauce, ice cream, carrot puree and rice).
• Mix Montelukast granules with a spoonful of cold or room temperature soft food. 
• Make sure the entire dose is mixed with the food.

Make sure the child takes the whole spoonful of granules/food at once (within 15 minutes). IMPORTANT:

• The granules/food mixture should not be stored for later use.
• Montelukast granules are not intended to be dissolved in liquid, but liquid can be taken immediately after the granules have been swallowed.
• Montelukast granules can be taken regardless of food intake.

If you take too much Montelukast granules:

• Contact your child's doctor immediately for advice.
• Most of the overdose reports report no side effects. 
• The most commonly occurring symptoms, which have been reported for overdose in adults and children, are abdominal pain, sleepiness , thirst, headache, vomiting and hyperactivity.

If you have forgotten to give Montelukast granules to your child:

• Try giving Montelukast granules as prescribed. However, if the child does not get a dose, just continue with the usual dosage which is one sachet daily.
• You should not give a double dose to replace a missed dose.

If the child interrupts treatment with Montelukast granules:

• Montelukast granules can only treat your child's asthma if he/she continues to take it.
• It is important that your child continues to take Montelukast granules for as long as the doctor has prescribed it. 
• It will help your child control his asthma.
• Ask your child's doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about using this medicine.

Warnings And Precautions:

• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before your child uses Montelukast granules.
• If your child's asthma or breathing worsens, contact a doctor immediately.
• Montelukast as granules is not intended to treat acute asthma attacks.
• If a seizure occurs, follow the instructions the doctor has given you for your child.
• Always have your child's emergency medicine available.
• It is important that your child takes the asthma medicine as prescribed by your doctor.
• Montelukast should not be used in place of other asthma medicines that your doctor has prescribed for your child.
• If your child is taking asthma medication, be aware that if he/she develops a combination of symptoms including a flu-like sensation, tingling or numbness in the arms and legs, worsening of lung symptoms and/or rash, contact the doctor.
• Your child should not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs (also known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or nsaids) if it makes her/his asthma worse.
• Do not give this medicine to children under 6 months of age.

Ingredients:

• The active substance is montelukast.
• Each sachet of granules contains montelukast sodium equivalent to 4 mg montelukast.
